Imagine losing everything and everyone. Family, friends, and any support once had, gone. All because a difference in belief. Scott, lost his entire family, 17 members on his fathers side, ex-communicated him. He left the church 15 years ago, and hasn’t had any contact with his family for 13 of those 15 years. It's known as "shunning" in the world of Jehovah's Witness, and something that really took Scott by surprise when it happened to him. He explains why during our conversation. And also his reasons for eventually leaving the church.
Finally deciding to cut ties with the church, he was left with no one. No support, family, or friends. And that’s where things got interesting. Originally from the States, he caught a flight and headed across the other side of the map, Vietnam – “I would of probably just lived with that traumatic thing inside, and never said anything about it, but something started happening living there.” What happened in Vietnam that changed Scott's mind from wanting to escape, live a "normal" life, and not talk about his experience, to an activist?
